Artist Statement
Life has a funny way of showing us our paths even during times when it seems dark and hopeless – and in my case, I had to be lost to find what I was looking for, which is what my current work reflects; the journey. From a two dimensional painting, I expanded my vision for portraying our ever-fluid state in life of being either lost or found into a lifelike hedge maze with ceramic sculptures.
The maze is constructed from recycled newspapers, but only utilizing text portions of the pages to mirror past conversations and memories. Within the body of works, I incorporate two suggestive forms of characters to represent the dichotomies of the positive (the rabbit) and negative (the snake). These two opposite pillars are nemeses to one another, and by displaying the sculptures from the ceiling implies the almost free-fall periods of instability life can present.
Ceramics is a medium of ambiguity, incredibly delicate yet everlasting, which is why I chose this medium to narrate our individual and collective journeys.
“An artist’s only concern is to shoot for some kind of perfection on his own terms, not anyone else’s.”
